As we launch DRI Canada’s Year of the Exercise, we are pleased to announce our first national professional-development offering of the year—a comprehensive 3-day intensive designed for experienced continuity, resilience, and emergency-management professionals who are responsible for designing, evaluating, and defending exercises and programs.

This flagship event brings together exercise design, performance measurement, and executive insight in a single, integrated learning experience.

Integrating Complexity into Exercise Design
Luncheon Event
February 12, 2026
Presented by Cynthia Wenn, CBCP
Doctoral Student, Royal Roads University

Over the last thirty years, researchers have studied how system behaviours change as they become more complex.  If crises or disasters are seen as complex environments, then to prepare our teams to respond to them, it would follow that simulation exercises must also be designed as or designed to mimic the behavior of a complex environment. This presentation will share how exercise design practitioners are leveraging complexity thinking and provide insight on when, why and how you can modify the complexity of your exercise environment.
