Become the Five-Headed Beast
of Business Continuity Management

Reta Setrak, CBCP, MBCI

Summary:
Do you ever feel like you're being pulled in five different directions? That's probably because you are. During this presentation, we'll show you how to deal with the myriad demands on you as a BCM professional, what it takes to be successful in your organization and the skills you need to acquire to make your BCM plan work.

Introduction:
This presentation is introduced by Mary Genyk, CBCP, President of DRI CANADA and presented by Reta Setrak, CBCP, Director and Secretary of DRI CANADA.

Managing a business continuity program in an organization seems to require the effort of a mythical dragon with five heads: The Analyst, The Business Continuity Planner, The Project Manager, The Cross-Functional Manager and The Technical Writer. However intimidating as it sounds, in order to shape a successful program for your organization, you must be prepared to become that dragon.

In this session, we will examine:

  • The skills required from an Analyst and how they fit within your BCM program.
  • What a Business Continuity Planner needs to know.
  • How to best leverage the role of the Project Manager.
  • Practical techniques for the Cross-Functional Manager in "managing up."
  • How to use the skills of a Technical Writer to communicate your ideas.

Key takeaways:

  • Why the "five-headed dragon" is a fact of life in BCM planning and execution.
  • How we can fulfill all five key BCM roles
  • What can we do to close the gaps in our current BCM program.

This five-faceted concept is driven by the business continuity management life cycle itself, which assumes that you already possess all the skills necessary to understand, develop, implement, test and embed the program with respect to your organization's culture. While there are a variety of ways to describe the BCM life cycle, there are also many commonalities between organizations.

You will be encouraged to take a close look at your own BCM programs and evaluate it in relation to the program life cycle. Have you been frustrated by lack of resources, or by overwork? Do you feel challenged by your own expectations, while feeling underappreciated? Have you identified problems in the program, and can those problems be traced to certain groups, individuals or the organization as a whole?

By taking a closer look at your organization and your BCM program in this context, you might be able to assess whether you need to compartmentalize your BCM function and become that five-headed dragon.
